IoT Revolutionizes Philippine Agriculture as Smart Farming Technologies Reach Small-Scale Farmers

Digital Agriculture Funding Boost Signals Government Commitment to Precision Farming

The Philippines has substantially increased its investment in agricultural technology, with the Department of Agriculture’s 2026 budget raising digital agriculture funding from PHP 500 million to PHP 600 million to support more precise, efficient, and evidence-based farming and food value chains. This funding escalation reflects growing recognition that IoT technologies can address longstanding productivity challenges in a sector that employs a significant portion of the national workforce while facing persistent pressures from climate variability, pest outbreaks, and resource constraints.

Smart Agriculture Market Demonstrates Robust Growth Trajectory

The Philippines Smart Agriculture Market was estimated at USD 1,486 million in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 2,749 million by 2032, representing a compound annual growth rate of 13.0%. This expansion is driven by the integration of soil sensors, weather monitoring systems, and automated environmental control technologies that enable farmers to make data-informed decisions about irrigation scheduling, fertilizer application, and pest management.

The Department of Agriculture has launched a dedicated initiative to integrate IoT technologies into farming practices, with expected improvements in crop yield by mid-2026. The Department of Science and Technology has allocated PHP 600 million for a four-year smart farming project beginning in the second half of 2025, part of an overarching program to deploy site-specific crop advisories, weather forecasts, and pest or disease alerts to farmers across the archipelago.

DOST Establishes Regional Smart AgriTech Innovation Hubs

The Department of Science and Technology has launched Smart AgriTech and Innovation Hubs, initially in Central Visayas, to help farmers manage crops through science-based, climate-smart technologies. The hubs provide digital platforms featuring real-time crop advisories and weather forecasts, currently supporting nine crops including rice, with the Water Advisory for Irrigation Scheduling System serving as a flagship tool for optimizing water usage — a critical capability given the increasing frequency of drought conditions in agricultural regions.

Hydroponic Automation and AI-Assisted Plant Growing

Research institutions have developed IoT-based automated hydroponic systems for precision lettuce growth management, addressing the need for affordable, scalable, and locally adaptable automation systems particularly suited for small-scale farmers in developing regions. The DOST-Advanced Science and Technology Institute’s Gul.ai project — an AI- and IoT-assisted small-scale plant-growing system — has entered its second phase, running through December 2026, providing a controlled-environment hydroponic system for experimentation on plant growth with remote monitoring and management capabilities.

Connected Agriculture Market Expands Access to Rural Communities

The Philippines Connected Agriculture Market was estimated at USD 423 million in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 609 million by 2032, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 6.6%. This expansion reflects the broader trend of IoT adoption extending beyond metropolitan centers into rural agricultural communities, where connectivity solutions such as LoRaWAN are being evaluated for their potential to bridge connectivity gaps and support e-governance services alongside agricultural applications.

The integration of IoT technologies into Philippine agriculture represents a fundamental shift from traditional farming practices toward data-driven precision agriculture, with the potential to enhance food security, increase farmer incomes, and build resilience against climate-related disruptions.
